As the days get warmer and longer, it’s crucial to make sure you have a diligent skincare routine for summer. The higher temperatures and increased UV exposure can make your skin more susceptible to damage and dehydration. Therefore, you’ll need specific products to help you keep your skin as healthy and happy as possible.

While sunscreen is one of the most important things to have on hand, it’s not the only product you need. We’ve created a step-by-step guide to keep your skin looking its best throughout the upcoming summer season.

Use a Cleanser

Ursa Major Fantastic Face Wash - skincare routine for summer
Shopbop

The first thing you should do when as part of your skincare routine for summer is cleanse your face. You want to remove all the junk from the night so you have a fresh canvas!

With just a small amount of product (like the Ursa Majar Fantastic Face Wash) you can wash away all of last’s night oil and dirt. It’s made with all-natural ingredients like aloe, white tea, lemon, and sugar maple, which as you can imagine, smells wonderful!

Exfoliate If Needed

Caudalie - skincare routine for summer
Sephora

To get rid of excess oils that can happen from the heat, use an exfoliator every few days. This will help to purify the skin by cleaning out the pores. We like this Deep Exfoliating Cleanser because it has natural volcanic sand microbeads that do all the scrubbing. Plus, it has a soothing menthol scent that leaves your skin feeling refreshed!

Peptide Skinjection Exfoliating Peel Pads, image number 1
Peter Thomas Roth

Using Peter Thomas Roth’s Peptide Skinjection Exfoliating Peel Pads can gently remove dead skin cells, revealing a smoother complexion. These pads are perfect for maintaining skin’s clarity and brightness during summer, ensuring your skincare routine stays effective and refreshing.

Prep with Vitamin C

Superdoseâ„¢ C Vitamin C Oxygen Boosting Moisturiser - skincare routine for summer
Beauty Pie

Vitamin C is essential any time of the year, but it’s especially important for summer. It helps to fight free radicals while also brightening and refining your skin texture.

This Superdose Vitamin C Moisturizer is a great option, as it contains Nikkol VC-IP, the most powerful form of cosmetic vitamin C. However, it’s also formulated with a microbiome-activated brightener and pink grapefruit and avocado oils. Together, these ingredients give tired-looking skin a healthy, glowing look.

Add a Serum

Biossance - Squalane + Hyaluronic Acid Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum 1.69 oz / 50 mL Clean plus Planet Aware - skincare routine for summer
Sephora

There are lots of different serums to use depending on what type of skin issue you’re looking to address. For best results, serums should be applied after your vitamin C but before you moisturize.

If you want plumper, firmer skin, choose something hyaluronic acid and copper peptides. This Rapid Plumping Serum by Biossance contains both, along with paracress extract, polyglutamic acid, and squalane. Or if you have dark spots, you can use a corrector like this Even Better Clinical Serum by Clinique.

Layer on a Moisturizer

COOLA® The Great Barrier Cream Fortifying Moisturizer, Main, color, No Colr - skincare routine for summer
Nordstrom

Even in hot and humid weather, you shouldn’t be afraid to give your skin some extra hydration. A moisturizer can reinforce the skin’s barrier and combat any external or environmental stressors.

Something lightweight like COOLA’s Great Barrier Cream Fortifying Moisturizer is good for summer. It contains sustainable harvest sea kelp and blue algae, which are rich in amino acids, fatty acids, antioxidants, and proteins. Even the scent is 100% naturally derived from plants, which is really unique for a product that smells this wonderful!

Protect with Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must-have for any summer skincare regime. Not only for your face, neck, and chest but also for your entire body. When looking at sunscreens, make sure you choose one that is broad-spectrum, protecting against UVA and UVB rays. This will make sure you are safe from sunburns and wrinkles!

If you’re still confused about the different types of sunscreen types – don’t worry! Read up on the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen to choose which type is best for your needs.

Supergoop!® Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 PA+++, Main, color,
Nordstrom

Goop’s Unscreen Sunscreen is a fan favorite, as it’s invisible, weightless, and scent-free. Plus, it’s SPF 40, so it’s stronger than other brands and products out there. You can also get Goop sunscreen with a tint (Glow Screen). It has a slight pearlescent shimmer and also acts as a makeup primer that can be used before your foundation.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 70 - 3 fl oz, 1 of 16
Target

For your body sunscreen, you’ll also want something that is water-resistant (for sweat) and has a high SPF. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen Lotion has an SPF of 70, blocking 97% of UVB and UVA rays. Or if you prefer a spray, you can also go with Sun Bum Original Sunscreen Spray. It too has an SPF of 70 and contains vitamin E for extra nourishment.

Add Extra Sun Protection

Sunscreen and foundation aren’t the only way to protect yourself from the sun. If you’re planning on spending extended time outside, don’t forget your sunglasses. UV exposure can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, or other types of long-term damage.

A sun hat is another useful accessory to keep on hand. Having that extra layer of protection for your face, neck, and ears can help reduce the risk of skin cancer. At the end of the day, do whatever it takes to reduce your exposure to the amount of harmful UV rays outside!

Creating a skincare routine for summer is essential for protecting your skin from the outdoor elements. While sun protection is crucial, you’ll also want to invest in products for cleansing and hydration. That way, you’ll have youthful vibrant skin for the rest of the year (and for the rest of your life!)
