Are you going on a trip and wondering what to pack in diaper bag when traveling? While traveling with kids can be extremely rewarding, it does require a lot of preparation and planning. What you need going out at home may be a lot different than what you need on vacation.
Having a well-stocked diaper bag can make your trip much more comfortable and enjoyable (for both parents and baby!). It’s important to pack the essentials as well as a few backup items in case of emergencies. That way, you’ll be equipped to handle any type of situation you may encounter while exploring the world with your little one!
What to Pack in Diaper Bag When Traveling
Diaper Bag
The first thing you need to have on hand before you start packing is a nice diaper bag! While you may already have one for your day-to-day adventures, it might not be comfortable for traveling. A backpack-style diaper bag is a great option, as it’s spacious and comfortable to wear for long periods of time. We really love this lightweight Mini Roo Diaper Backpack.
Diapers and Wipes
This is another essential item to stock in your diaper bag! As a parent, you know how many diapers your child goes through in a day. But if you want to be on the safe side, we recommend bringing a couple of extra. You never know how the excitement of travel could impact your baby’s tummy! Along with the diapers, you’ll also need to carry other general cleaning products like baby wipes and diaper rash cream.
Disposable Bags
Disposing of a dirty diaper can be hard while you’re traveling. If you’re not near a trash container, then you’ll need to wrap it up until you can find one. Having disposable plastic bags can be a huge lifesaver while you’re out and about. You can also use a ziplock bag (go for the larger gallon size!) as well.
Changing Pad
You never know when you’ll have to plop down to change your baby’s diaper! Since you might not be near a bathroom, then you’ll be happy to have a changing pad with you. Just place it on a table, desk, or even the floor to provide comfort during diaper changes. It’s made from water-resistant PVC materials so it can be easily wiped clean in case things get messy.
Change of Clothes
This is important to have – not just for your baby, but for you as well! It doesn’t matter if it’s dirt, food, or spit-up, having a spare change of clothes can save you while you’re out and about. Bring an extra shirt, a pair of leggings, and socks for the little one. And for you, a simple T-shirt and a spare pair of leggings will do the trick.
Sun Protection
If you’re traveling somewhere warm, sun protection is a must. We recommend always carrying baby-safe sunscreen with you at all times (you should reply it every two hours). This one is also water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, so it’s great if you’re headed to the pool or beach. In addition to sunscreen, don’t forget about sunglasses and a hat! Protecting their delicately soft skin should be a priority when you’re traveling.
Food for Mealtime
Babies can get hungry any time of the day. So its important that you travel prepared with whatever they are currently feeding on. Even if you are breastfeeding, having a bottle of formula or pre-pumped breast milk (in an insulated bag) can be a smart idea. Or if your kids are a little older, having a tupperwear full of healthy snacks can satisfy any mid-day cravings.
Burp Cloth and Bib
Any parent knows how messy things can get during feeding time. That’s why it’s always a good idea to have a few burp cloths and bibs in your diaper bag. We prefer to use cotton terry-cloth muslin, as it’s lightweight and absorbent. This set from CRANE BABY comes with three burp clothes (you can also use them as wipes or rags). They also make bibs out of the same material but in a variety of cute prints.
Zoo Snack Cup: Fun, Mess-Free Snacking for Kids on the Go
Packing snacks is essential for any trip with kids. A Zoo Snack cup keeps snacks accessible and mess-free, making it a perfect addition to your diaper bag. It’s designed for little hands and helps keep them happy and occupied during travel.
Sling or Wrap
Traveling with kids is a lot easier with a stroller. But there may be times when you want to keep your little one close to you, too. Traditional baby carriers can be large and bulky, which isn’t great for traveling. But a baby sling or wrap is thin, foldable, and won’t take up a lot of space in your bag. It’s great for navigating cities or airports. Plus, this style of wrap helps with calming the fussy ones as they’ll get to be snuggled up to mom!
Besides spending time together as a family, there are so many great reasons to travel with your kids. Even if they’re a baby, traveling can introduce them to new experiences and get them used to being in different environments. Although it may seem like an intimidating task, being properly prepared can make things less stressful. It doesn’t matter if you’re going on a road trip or flying across the country. If you know what to pack in a diaper bag when traveling, you won’t have to worry about unexpected situations.
