Flower candle making is so much easier than you might think! With just a few simple tools, you can create a candle with any scent or design you’d like. Not only is this a great home décor DIY, but it also makes great gifts for weddings or birthdays!
In this tutorial, we’ll share the basics steps on how to melt and pour the wax. We’ve also included three of our favorite candle decoration ideas for inspiration.
Wedding Favor Candle
Materials:
- Soy wax (From JOANN)
- A Long Spoon
- Mason Jar (from Target)
- A Wick
- Glitter Tag & Ribbons
- Essential Oils
- Clips
- Thermometer
- Double Pot (for Bain marie)
Instructions:
- For this candle, you’ll need double the amount of wax that fits in your vessel. When melted, the liquid wax will be half of what it is in solid form.
- Place the wax into the smaller pot and add water to the large pot.
- Place the double pot on the stovetop and set to medium heat (you don’t want the water to boil).
- Stir the wax with a spoon as it melts to prevent air bubbles.
- Take your thermometer and measure the temperature of the wax. It should be 160°F or 70-75°C.
- Turn off the burner and let the wax cool slightly before adding your essential oils. Remember, the heat from the wax might burn off some of the scents. For this reason, we recommend adding double the amount of oil for a more intense aroma.
- Take your wick and dip the end into the hot wax. Then place it on the bottom of the glass jar to help it stick.
- Secure the wick with a clip to help it stay put while it dries.
- Now, pour the liquid wax into your vessel.
- Let the entire thing cool overnight. The wax should be hardened before you start customizing it.
- Remove the clip and cut the wick.
- Sprinkle glitter over the top of the candle. Then, add your gift tag to the lid and tie a ribbon for decoration!
Aromatherapy Flower Candle
Materials:
- Soy wax
- A Long Spoon
- Metal box or container
- A Wick
- Dried flowers
- Essential Oils
- Clips
- Thermometer
- Double Pot (for Bain marie)
Instructions:
- Follow the wax melting steps 1 to 9 in the above tutorial.
- Instead of letting the candle dry overnight, we’ll start decorating the candle when only the top is slightly white. This makes it easier for the dried flowers to stick to the wax.
*Tip* If the wax is too hard, you can always take a blow dryer to melt the top part of the candle. Another option is to melt more wax and add another layer so the flowers can stick.
- Arrange your flower petals in a pretty design on your candle. We recommend using dried flowers with bright colors, like lavender or rose. You can also use dried herbs like rosemary or thyme.
- Let the candle dry overnight. Clip the wick to a desirable length before lighting.
Artsy Candle
Materials:
- Soy wax
- A Long Spoon
- Candle vase
- A Wick
- Essential Oils
- Cupcake liners
- Crayons
- Clips
- Thermometer
- Double Pot (for Bain marie)
Instructions:
- Measure out the wax to fit your desired vessel or vase. Add the wax to your small pot.
- Now, choose a crayon color (the crayon will dye the wax and change its color). Break the candle into small pieces and add it to the wax in the small pot.
- Place the double pot on the stove and let it melt.
- Once the wax is fully melted, add your essential oils.
- Dip the wick into the wax and secure it to the bottom of your vase. Hold with a clip.
- Pour in the hot wax. Let it dry and harden.
- Now choose a second crayon color. Break up the crayon and place the pieces in a silicone cupcake liner. Add a few spoonful of the wax chips to the liner as well.
- Microwave the wax for about 1 minute and then mix with a spoon.
- Now, pour the new color over the candle, adding in a second, colorful layer.
- Feel free to continue with more layers of different colors! Just make sure the previous layer is completely cool before adding more layers.
- Cut the wick and light!
