You may be familiar with different yoga practices like Vinyasa and Hatha, but have you ever heard of throat chakra yoga? Our bodies have seven different chakras, each corresponding with a different organ. The throat chakra is responsible for self-expression and communication.

Healing Throat Chakra Yoga Positions

There are certain yoga positions that are key in balancing our throat chakra. We’ll take you through this relaxing and healing practice so that you can channel and restore your chakra energy. You can also follow this practice with a full-body healing chakra yoga class too.

Open Throat Pose

  1. In a seated position, clasp your fingers together and place them underneath your chin next to your throat.
  2. Tilt your head back, keeping your hands placed directly by your chin.
  3. Take 10 deep breaths in, exhaling slowly with each breath.

Extended Tip Toe

  1. While sitting on your knees, raise your body until your toes are supporting your waist underneath your bottom.
  2. With your hands clasped, stretch them straight above your head towards the sky.
  3. Lean your head back slightly.
  4. Take 10 deep breaths in and out.

Lion’s Breath

  1. Start by sitting cross-legged with your feet lightly resting on each thigh.
  2. Place your hands on the ground in front of you with your fingers turned towards your legs and your palms facing outward.
  3. Raise your body slightly until your butt is off the ground and your hands and knees and keeping your weight balanced.
  4. Tilt your head slightly back and open your mouth wide.
  5. Stick your tongue out and take 10 big inhales, and exhales.

Cat/Cow Pose

  1. Start in a tabletop position with your knees and hands on the floor.
  2. Lift your head and your butt while lowering your belly towards the ground. This is called cow position.
  3. Hold for two breaths.
  4. Now, arch your back, curling your tailbone down toward the ground. Your head should also be hung low, giving your neck a good stretch.
  5. Hold for two breaths.
  6. Repeat the positions two more times.

For yoga poses that involve kneeling or sitting on your knees, it’s best to have a comfortable yoga mat. We like this mat from Gaiam because it also provides a visual guide for self-practice.

Cobra Pose

  1. This throat chakra yoga position is a holding position. With your hands planted on the ground and your legs extended out behind you. Your feet should be flush against the floor, and your head should be slightly lifted so that your neck is in line with your spine.
  2. Hold the position for 10 breaths.

King Cobra Pose

  1. You can transition to the King Cobra throat chakra pose easily from Cobra pose. Instead of your legs extended behind you, raise them to a 90-degree angle and point your toes towards the sky.
  2. Hold for 10 breaths.

Child Pose

  1. This is one of our favorite throat chakra yoga poses for resting. Start in a kneeling position.
  2. Fold your torso over your knees until you are resting on your thighs.
  3. Stretch your arms out in front of you and rest your forehead on the mat or to the side.
  4. Take 10 deep inhales and exhales.

When it comes to child pose, the best way to get the full relaxing experience is to be comfortable, and tight or restrictive clothing can have the opposite effect. If you need loose-fitting and soft yoga clothing, Yoga Club is a great athletic clothing subscription to try!

Fish Pose

  1. This pose starts with your butt on the ground and your legs extended in front of you. Your hands should be by your side.
  2. Take a deep breath and push your hands into the ground, raising your torso and head away from the floor. Your back should be in an arched position.
  3. Hold for 10 breaths.
  4. An alternative to this throat chakra yoga position is the supported fish pose. Instead of holding the pose with your legs stretched out, you can bend your legs into a butterfly position so the bottoms of your feet are touching.

Bridge Pose

  1. For this position, lay on your back and prop your legs up with your feet flat on the ground. Your arms should be extended by your side.
  2. Slowly raise your torso and pelvis off the ground, inching your arms underneath your shoulder blades and back for support. You can clasp your hands together under your back while you press down towards the ground.
  3. Hold for 10 breaths.

Shoulder Stand

  1. Lay on your back with your feet flush to the floor.
  2. Life both of your legs off the ground and move them until they are pointed straight at the sky.
  3. Your torso and waist should also be lifted, so take your hands and place them on your lower back for support.
  4. Inhale and exhale 10 times.

Plow

  1. Start in a shoulder stand position.
  2. Instead of keeping your legs pointed towards the sky, bend at the waist and let them slowly fall over your torso towards your head.
  3. Keep bending until your toes rest on the ground (right above your head).
  4. Hold for 10 breaths.
