Katie started her own business, Shop Katie May at the age of 21. Her passion for comfortable, affordable and unique clothing styles encouraged her to create her own brand. As a mom she decided to also incorporate her motherhood into her brand, by including collections for mothers and their kids. Her goal with her clothing line is to offer fair market prices while still maintaining ethical standards! Oh, and to top it all off, all of her items sold are handmade!

The Interview:

Katie is such an inspiring mom so we wanted to ask her a little more on how she got to where she is and how she manages her business while being a mom of two!

What inspired you to start your business? Tell us little bit about the story of you becoming an entrepreneur.

I was inspired mostly by my kids and the lack of great quality sleep and play wear that was out there. My girls LOVE girly pajamas and play clothes and after lots or research I realized there was lack of offerings in that particular space. I THRIVE off creating anything whether it’s a pretty plate of food, birthday day party or piece of clothing. So, it was a natural progression into me starting a business.

Since you are also a mom… How do you balance your personal and professional life?

Currently I am working hard on this. It’s a real challenge. Since being a mom is my main priority and my husband’s job pays the bills, I just make sure I ALWAYS put the kids first before working on my business.

If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?

I think it would be to follow their heart but also be realistic! In order for something to thrive there has to be demand but I also think that in order for a business to succeed there has to be a level of passion. Finding the balance is the key!

Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?

The internet, technology! Luckily for me after my first fashion career I fell into another role in business development for an Internet marketing company. I am able to source all my fabrics and do all my own website development from the comfort of usually my bed when the kids fall asleep! Without technology or being tech savvy, I would have to hire more people or actually get out to a fabric show room. As broad as an answer this is, technology helps me to create!

Is there anything you would do differently if you went back to when you were 20-22?

Never! I wish I could say yes but I’m so grateful for my kids and husband that maybe if I altered one thing about my life they wouldn’t be here today! Also, I’m a firm believer that everything in your past good and bad guides you into being the best you!

What do you read? How do you get your information?

I am a subscriber to blogs like the skim and have notifications for various things but at the end of the day, I’m luckily if I can read all my emails! I’m so pressed for time! I totally feel so terrible now for answering this question! Need to read more!

On a side note, if you’re a busy mom entrepreneur, we think a great app the can help you stay up to date on the news and keep you informed while on the go (which we know all mom are always busy and on the go) is Morning Brew. Keep learning, stay entertained and informed for free with Morning Brew!

What is the hardest thing about being a mom entrepreneur? Is there any special life balance hack you can share?

The hardest thing about being a mom entrepreneur is not having all the time in the world to pour into my business. My life balance hack would be to plan but also be flexible. For example, I plan my weekly meals but if something comes up or I don’t have time, I have a backup plan of some simple freezer meal or maybe we decide dinner out is better. Or if I plan to do a launch but didn’t get something done on time by pushing it back one extra day (prior to an announcement) is okay!

I try to remain flexible in life and work while having the best plan that works for me and the family. Also, I always tell myself the best thing about being a mom entrepreneur is when these kids are in school full time, I will have my work to keep me busy. Now, I’m only spending the time I have but I am not a “lady who lunches” so I will most definitely need a passion once my kids are busier.

As one can see, Katie May is a busy woman, but this does not mean its impossible to be a mami entrepreneur yourself! Follow your passion, strive to be the best version of yourself and never give up!
