How to make a baguette - Ingredients

Baguette Recipe:

  1. In a bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, and salt until thoroughly combined.
  2. Gradually add 2/3 of the lukewarm water (1 cup) into the dry mixture. You can use a spatula to mix the ingredients together to form a wet dough.
  3. Add the remaining ½ cup of water to the dough.
  4. The dough should be thick and slightly sticky, which might make it difficult to stir using the spatula. At this point, you can use your hands to knead the dough on a floured surface. Body heat may be enough to stretch and knead the dough, although those with colder hands might need to rely on the lukewarm water to heat the mixture.
  5. When the dough is mixed and smooth to the touch, place it back in the bowl and cover it with a damp cloth or lid.
  6. One of the most important parts of knowing how to make a baguette is the rising process. With the dough covered, let it rise for 2 to 3 hours or until the dough has doubled in size. Make sure to place the bowl somewhere warm, or else it won’t have enough heat or humidity to grow. You may also choose to place it in the oven over a bowl of boiling water (like a bain-marie).
  7. Sprinkle flour on your surface and transfer the dough from the bowl. Using your hands, knead the dough continuously for 5 to 10 minutes. We recommend using your palms to knead the dough in a heart shape or criss-cross motion (push the dough with your right palm to the left, then use your left hand to push it to the right).
  8. After a few minutes, you should notice that the dough becomes stretchy and loose. At this point, roll the dough into a round ball and place it back into the bowl. Cover again with a damp cloth or lid and let it rise for another 2 to 3 hours.
  9. While the dough is rising, cover a metal tray with a cloth. Sprinkle some flour over the cloth. How to make a baguette at home
  10. Once the dough has risen (it should be doubled in size), take it out of the bowl and cut it into three sections.
  11. Flatten one of the sections slightly with your palm. Fold both the left and right sides into the center, then fold the top down towards yourself. Press the center and start rolling the dough from the center to the sides. This should create an oblong baguette shape.
  12. Place the baguette-shaped dough on the dusted cloth and cove it to prevent it from drying out.
  13. Repeat with the two remaining sections.
  14. Sprinkle more flour over the three sections and cover with a cloth to rest for 30 minutes.
  15. While you’re waiting for the dough, preheat the oven at 465°F (230°C).
  16. Boil water using a pot or kettle. Pour the water into a baking pan and place it at the bottom of the oven to create steam. This is a trick to know how to make a baguette just like they do in France!
  17. Line your baking tray with baking paper. Unwrap the dough from the cloth and place it on the baking paper.
  18. Feel free to score the baguettes with a knife or dentate knife to make the iconic baguette pattern. Situate your knife 45° from the top of the dough and make a short score diagonally towards the bottom. It’s important that you make the lines overlap with one another. Each baguette should have 3 or 4 scores.
  19. Place the tray in the oven and bake for 25 minutes.
  20. If you want to know how to make a baguette with a crispy crust, remove the pan of water and let the dough bake for another 5 minutes in the oven.
