If you pay any attention to beauty trends, you’ll know about how great a Korean skincare routine can be. Koreans are well known for their flawless skin (just Google K-pop stars to see for yourself!) and light makeup. Their extensive, 8-step evening routines have become popular. But a much simpler Korean beauty secret you can harness to get flawless skin exists. It’s a Korean face mask that’s rice-based.
Why Use a Rice Mask?
Rice is loaded with vitamins B1 and B2, making it a favorite K-beauty ingredient to rejuvenate the skin, target enlarged pores, and boost skin elasticity. It boasts the ability to smooth and clear the skin so that it’s free of excess oil, dead skin cells, and other impurities that can cause unpleasant pimples.
Rice masks are rich in antioxidants that minimize the skin’s production of elastase, a compound that causes premature aging of the skin. That’s why many people use rice water as a solution to reduce fine lines, age marks, and dark spots. This delays the aging process. It also contains ferulic acid, which is an antioxidant that can protect your skin from free radicals.
You can also use rice masks for skin brightening, reducing the appearance of dark marks from sun damage or past spots and scars. This is why having a Korean skincare routine can be so great!
How to Make a Korean Face Mask
What You’ll Need:
- A pot
- 2 tsp coconut oil (or any other carrier oil like grapeseed, olive, jojoba, or almond oil)
- Water (1.5 cups)
- 1 cup long-grain rice
- A blender
Instructions:
- Wash the rice in cold water, setting aside the starchy water to use in step 6
- Place the washed rice into the pot with some clean water and boil until cooked
- Transfer the rice to the blender
- Add the coconut oil
- Blend until creamy (you can add some rice water to reach the right consistency)
- If necessary, use some of the starchy water you saved in step 1 to get a creamier texture; it should be a similar consistency to any other moisturizer you use
When it’s ready, wash your face with your favorite cleanser (if you have dry skin and are struggling to find the right one, we’ve written a guide on how to select your cleanser here). Next, apply the mixture to your face and leave it for about 15 minutes or until it starts to dry. Then, wash the mixture off with cold water.
You can easily store this cream in a sealed container in the fridge. It will last for about a week.

Get More Out of Your Skin Routine!
A Korean skincare routine comes down to more than just slathering on a luxurious face mask. In fact, many Korean people love to do multiple skincare steps every day.
If you want the glowing, glass-smooth skin of your favorite K-pop star or actor, you’re in luck! Quite a few of them have shared their secrets. Here are just a few of them:
- Eat a well-balanced diet. If you consume a lot of vitamin C and nutrients that are good for your skin, you’ll have better skin!
- Use a moisturizer. Washing your face is important, but if you’re just cleansing, you’ll strip away the necessary moisture. Replace it with a high-quality moisturizer!
- Adopt the 424 method. Specifically, spend 4 minutes rubbing oil into your skin, 2 minutes with a foam cleanser, and 4 minutes rinsing with water.
- Drink lots of water and get lots of sleep. If you stay hydrated, your skin will remain more naturally moist! And sleeping cuts down on dark circles and bags under your eyes.
- Apply sunscreen, even if you’re not going to be laying out in the sun! Even a little bit of exposure to the sun’s rays can damage your skin. Sunscreen keeps your skin healthier and protects you from cancer!
