However, we know that perfecting the perfect smokey eye can be a challenging task. Getting the right smudge and wing takes a bit of patience and practice! But once you master the basics, you’ll be able to experiment with different styles and looks.

For the first tutorial, we’ll show you how to do a classic smokey eye that’s perfect for autumn. Then, we’ll do something a bit more colorful using the cozy shades of fall. And finally, we’ll finish with a fun tutorial that you can wear trick-or-treating or to a Halloween party!

The Best Fall Smokey Eye Tutorials

The Classic Fall Smokey Eye

The classic smokey eye is bold, dramatic, and perfect for those who want to make a bold statement. Generally, you’ll need to use a deep black or charcoal shade to achieve the look you want. But for fall, we highly recommend using something with a warmer tone to match the season’s cozy vibe.

Instead of a dark black palette, opt for something like a warm brown or bronze. It still has intensity without being too overbearing.

  1. Add your eye primer to the base of your entire lid.
  2. Brush on a deep brown eye shadow over the crease and blend with a fluffy brush.
  3. Now, add a darker shade shadow, something like an espresso, across the lid. Focus on the outer corner for more depth. Blend the two colors together.
  4. For the center of your lid, let’s add some shimmer. You can use copper or gold to give the smokey eye a warm highlight.

5. Apply your eyeliner to the upper lash line. Black can work here, but                  you can also use a dark brown pencil for a softer look. Smudge or                      blend if you prefer.

6. Finish with mascara or false lashes.

Fall is such a great time to play with colors. Thankfully, autumnal shades work well with many different types of eye and skin colors.

Brown eyes are very versatile and can pull off almost any fall shade. Jewel tones like dark greens, sapphire blues, and deep purples work very well for the colored smokey eye. People with blue eyes should go for contrasting warm shades like copper, gold, or orange. And those with green eyes can choose browns and dark reds, or something more contrasting like purple.

Once you have your color palette picked out, use this tutorial to perfect the colored fall smokey eye.

  1. Add eye primer to your lid as a base.
  2. Start with a neutral, matte shade as the base for your smokey eye. Apply it in the crease and blend with a brush.
  3. Now you can apply your main color directly to your lid. If you’re going for a bold look, you can layer the color to make it more intense.
  4. We also recommend using a darker shade of your main color on the outer corner of your eye. This adds depth and creates that wonderful iconic “V” you see in a smokey eye.
  5. Blend the transition and main colors together.
  6. Feel free to highlight the inner corner and brow bone with a lighter shade for a brightening effect.
  7. Line your eyes with a gel pencil eyeliner. Blacks and dark browns will add definition, but you can also choose a color that matches your palette. This is a great way to take the colored smokey eye look all the way!
  8. Since the colored eye look is softer than the classic smokey eye, we recommend smudging or blurring your wing.
  9. Finish with mascara or false lashes.

The Pumpkin Fall Smokey Eye

Halloween is the best time to rock a fun smokey eye look. And we have a festive Halloween smokey eye that feels like a costume in itself! Whether you’re dressing up as something sexy, spooky, or somewhere in between, this tutorial is perfect for a fun Halloween party.

  1. Prep your eyelid with a primer
  2. Sweep on a light orange base shade across your entire lid. If you don’t have a light orange, you can always use a peach color.
  3. Add your rich, pumpkin-orange eye shadow around your crease. Don’t be afraid to layer on the color to make your eyes pop! Blend outward up toward your brow bone.
  4. To deepen the look, we’ll want to add a warm brown shade to the corner of your eyes. Choose something like an espresso, cinnamon, or bronze.
  5. Shimmer is always good, so pat on some copper or gold eye shadow to the center of your lid.
  6. The eyeliner is where you can really go wild! Black works well, especially if you want that Jack-o-Lantern look. You can even draw on the triangle eyes and nose above your wing! But if you want something more subtle, you can use a dark brown liner instead.
  7. Play around with other add-ons to take your look to the next level. You can use loose glitter, chrome flakes, or even Halloween stickers.
  8. Finish off with mascara or falsies (the bigger, the better!), and enjoy your Halloween masterpiece!
