We all want to walk into our own house and have it look clean and sophisticated. But sometimes, life gets in the way and we don’t have the time to follow the latest trends. Other times, we just don’t know what to do with our 60s-era wallpaper.

I recently came across this conundrum and had to figure out how to make my modest home into one that shined bright like my kitchen counter tops. Here are my tips to make a house more expensive on a less-than-expensive budget.

The Bedroom:

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall

A great way to add some extra sophistication to your room is to add some mirrors . You could also buy big mirrors, install them on the closet and paint the mirrors’ frames to match the color of your door. Once you’re done painting the frames, glue them onto your closet doors.

Reading nook

Install a curved shower curtain in a corner of your bedroom and place see-through curtains on them. Place a beanbag chair or a small table and chair behind the curtains. Congrats! You’ve made a makeshift reading nook. When you want to get away from the world and read (as I often do), you have a perfect place to do it.

The Kitchen:

Wine rack

The area around your kitchen counter can get very messy. If you have plenty of bottles like red wine who need to stay out of the fridge, there’s no reason to hide them, organize them on a rack and use this to give a classy touch to your room.

Glass containers

I’ll admit it: A lot more than my sink is messy in my kitchen. Spices and dry goods take a lot of space. Rather than hiding it, I show my kitchen goods off with glass canisters. You can find good-looking glass canisters in any craft shop, complete with either a glass or stainless steel top.

Peel-and-stick backsplash kit

Installing a peel-and-stick backsplash is as easy as … sticking and peeling. It really is that easy! Find a mosaic backsplash kit to install in your kitchen. A good kit will come complete with all the tools you need. Simply clean your kitchen wall first and then stick your new backsplash on. Now you have a mosaic pattern in your kitchen that didn’t need any professional installation.

The Bathroom:

Framing your mirror

house

If you don’t have a medicine cabinet behind your mirror, then this one is a perfect solution. Find a frame that matches the decor of your bathroom, or if the frame doesn’t match, then take some time to paint it. Take down your mirror, frame it, and nail or drill it back into the wall. Now you have a great-looking mirror for your guests to use.

Use Fresh Flowers

Nothing like fresh flowers can make your bathroom look fresh and classy and they make it smell amazing!

Match your accessories

Matching is important when it comes to the bathroom too. Buy your accessories in set and match them to the color of the floor, walls and surfaces.

Cleaning tile grout

house

Sometimes DIY involves cleaning. The last thing I like doing around the house is cleaning the bathroom (ugh), but cleaning grout makes a huge difference. Find a toothbrush you no longer use and a heavy industrial brush. Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and baking soda together to make a grout cleaning solution. Use the large brush with the solution you just made to clean the tile, and use the toothbrush for more detailed cleaning.

The living room (and other parts of the house):

Gold flower pots

You can make anything fancier with gold! There’s plenty of gold pots out there for you, or if you’re handy, you can find some metallic gold paint and spray your flower pots to give them a gleaming look. Remember to paint your pots in at least two coats to ensure they’re fully covered.

Candles Sets

Candles can change a room completely! Buy a set of candles to put on the tea table and automatically add 10 points in style to your living room.
