Get All of Your Spring Cleaning Done with this DIY Detergent

As soon as the weather starts to get warmer, birds begin chirping louder and flowers begin to bloom, for most moms, there is one main thing that comes to mind—it’s time to do some serious spring cleaning. This includes everything from cleaning out closets and dusting everything in each room to shampooing carpets and clearing out cabinets and pantries (if you’d like a few spring cleaning hacks, click here).

Then there’s the cleaning. The literal cleaning. If it includes baseboards and light fixtures, this part alone can take a couple of weekends all on its own! But before you run to the grocery store to pick up a commercialized liquid detergent brand, have you concerned making some of your own?

If your concern is that you’re not sure that DIY laundry detergent will get things “clean clean”, just make sure to use an organic surfactant like [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DEDI68C” locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]coco glucoside[/easyazon_link]. It’s an ingredient that comes from fruits and vegetables (usually coconut oil, fruit sugars, potatoes or corn) that creates a gentle foamy cleanser that it totally biodegradable.

DIY Laundry Detergent

What You’ll Need:

• 1 laundry bar of soap ([easyazon_link identifier=”B00A7ZD9RE” locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]Fels-Naptha[/easyazon_link] was used for this video)
• 3 cups of [easyazon_link identifier=”B0029XNTEU” locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]super washing soda[/easyazon_link]
• 3 cups of [easyazon_link identifier=”B00HLROB6E” locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]Borax[/easyazon_link]
• 1 cup of OxiClean (optional)
• 20 drops of your favorite essential oil (also optional but recommended)
• [easyazon_link identifier=”B004B9DKAI” locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]White vinegar[/easyazon_link]
• Large bowl
• [easyazon_link identifier=”B0001BMYHA” locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]Airtight jar[/easyazon_link]
• Small spray bottle
• Ice cube tray or [easyazon_link identifier=”B07JB33K3C” locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]small silicone mold[/easyazon_link]

For “Loose” DIY Laundry Detergent

Step 1: With my grater, I grate one bar of laundry soap into a large bowl.

Step 2: Then I add the washing soda and Borax to the grated soap and mix with a whisk (if you want to use some OxiClean and/or add an essential oil or essential oil blend, this would be the time to add those as well).

Step 3: Finally, I transfer the detergent into an airtight jar and put it into my laundry room until it’s time to use it. I’m all done.

For DIY Laundry Detergent Pods

Step 1: I pour some white vinegar into a [easyazon_link identifier=”B000H88PCU” locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]small spray bottle[/easyazon_link].

Step 2: I spray the vinegar onto the “loose detergent” recipe until the ingredients start to clump up together.

Step 3: The next step is I put the detergent into either some ice trays or [easyazon_link identifier=”B07BR5JH1J” locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]silicone molds[/easyazon_link].

Step 4: Next, I put the trays/molds on a counter (out of the reach of kids or pets) and let them sit in room temperature overnight (roughly eight hours or so).

Step 5: Now all I have to do is pop them out of their molds and gently place them into an [easyazon_link identifier=”B0002T4ZL4″ locale=”US” tag=”twkmobile-20″]airtight jar[/easyazon_link] until it’s time to use them (or gift them to friends). How cool is that?
