1. Pants and Blouse
A pair of pants and a pretty blouse are on the casual side of the interview attire spectrum. However, it can still look professional if done correctly. We recommend a pair of neutral, tailored pants (not jeans), as well as an, ironed, button-up shirt. Your shirt can be plain, or it can have a simple pattern or neutral color.
If you want to dress up the outfit, you can wear it with a pair of heels. Ballet flats can also look nice (and spare your feet from pain and aches). Avoid everyday shoes like sneakers, sandals, or slip-ons.
2. Dress
Looking to add a bit of sophistication to your interview outfit? Then why not wear an office-appropriate dress? Look for something that hits at least the knee and isn’t too tight (and definitely doesn’t show too much skin). The little black dress is a timeless option, although you can also opt for something more colorful if you’d like.
For a job interview, we always recommend wearing tights under your dress. If you aren’t a big fan of nude-colored tights, choose something with color or texture. A simple pair of black pumps or kitten heels works very well with this combination.
3. Pencil Skirt and Top
Pencil skirts are generally considered to be business formal. However, you can play it down by pairing it with a casual top and colored cardigan instead of a blazer. If your skirt is black, look for a sweater that has a pop of color or a fun pattern.
Another option is to wear a neutral-colored cardigan over a playful blouse. The sweater will tone down the color or pattern and give you a more business-appropriate appearance. Just make sure to tuck your blouse into your skirt! Wearing your shirt over the band can look sloppy.
Chinos and Jacket
This classic combination is a smart and professional look for an interview. Look for a pair of chinos that are neutral-colored and cropped. The shorter length is very flattering and more casual compared to other types of pants. You also want to make sure the chinos are a little loose. Wearing skin-hugging pants can be considered to be too inappropriate for the office.
For the top, pair a shirt or blouse with a tailored blazer. Ideally, you should wear a shirt that can be tucked into your pants. Don’t worry about a belt – chinos often look better on women if they are worn without one. A closed-toe pair of heels also ties together the whole outfit and adds a professional touch.
Pantsuit
Not all pantsuits have to be stuffy and rigid. There are so many styles out there that are suitable for a business casual interview. Avoid traditional black or grey pantsuits (those tend to look too formal). Instead, look for a cream, navy, or even a colored suit instead.
The cut of the pantsuit also makes a difference. Cropped ankles or cropped sleeves give the suit a more relaxed style. You can also wear a simple T-shirt or blouse underneath to make it less formal. Button-ups, while professional, can be too much for a casual interview.
